Tonight! Hungry Filmmakers is Back

February 23rd, 2010 in Blog HomeNo Comments

Back by popular demand, the food documentary film screening and discussion event Hungry Filmmakers will return to Anthology Film Archives on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, after a sold out evening in December. This film series  aims to showcase the work of filmmakers who are dedicated to furthering sustainable food dialogue in a social, friendly environment that allows for deeper discussion. Offering viewers a sampling rather than a full screening of each, the program includes ten-minute excerpts or trailers of each of the featured films. Kerry Trueman, editor of EatingLiberally.org, will moderate a panel discussion with the directors and/or producers following the screenings. Throughout the films in this lineup, our filmmakers explore the dire effects of over fishing and the underlying causes of food-borne illnesses; the lack of fresh food in underserved communities, and the growth of sustainable food production practices that are inspirational to all.

Marion Nestle at NY Academy of Sciences

Nutrition expert Marion Nestle contends that the modern grocery store is a place where the giants of agribusiness compete for your purchases with profits-not health or nutrition-in mind. Her acclaimed book, What to Eat, helps readers navigate the supermarket aisles and make sensible food choices, from produce to packaged foods. Is organic food better? Are carbohydrates bad? What are “functional foods?”

At this event, Nestle will address the science of nutrition, explaining how hard nutrition science is to do and to interpret, and yet how easy it is for food marketers to confuse the science to sell products. Nestle will discuss the hot topics of sponsored science, functional foods, health claims, and self-endorsements.

Marion Nestle is Paulette Goddard Professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University, which she chaired from 1988-2003.

What’s Fresh? Find Out Today!

Even in today’s snowstorm, a handful of farmers are braving the elements to sell their produce at the Greenmarket at Union Square! Bravo to the hardy souls.

Wondering what’s out there for fresh produce to be had? In frustration with being unable to find morel mushrooms at his local market on a particular day, Michael Horn put his irritation into action. He developed whatisfresh.com, an online resource to help hungry New Yorkers find the produce they were looking for, without having to first trek all over the city. His website is a fantastic and thorough guide to the Greenmarkets of NYC. Use it to find out what’s fresh, seasonal, and local – and feel inspired to cook something new!

Please note: the website does not reflect changes due to inclement weather. Perhaps today is a day to stay in and heat up some soup.
